Cancer Rates Decreasing, But Slowly

It appears that advances in cancer screenings and cancer treatments may be working as a new report indicates deaths from cancers are continuing to drop. According to the most recent American Cancer Society annual report, between 2004 and 2008 cancer death rates dropped 1.6 percent in women and 1.8 percent in men annually. Although the rate drops are small, they are significant and a good sign as rates have continually dropped each year over the last 10 years. As good as this news is, it's still projected that more than 1.6 million people will be diagnosed with cancer and close to 600K individuals will die from cancer this year alone within the United States.

B Vitamins Good For Memory

While not necessarily giving your average Joe a photographic memory, results from a new Australian study indicate taking folic acid and vitamin B12 supplements over the course of several years may enhance the memory in a number of aging adults. The study examined more than 700 individuals aged 60 to 74 years who showed mild signs of depression. Participants were provided with pills containing either 400 micrograms of folic acid and 100 micrograms of vitamin B12, or a placebo pill containing no B vitamins or active ingredients. Participants were never informed which pills they were receiving. After one year no differences were detected between the two groups in various mental test scores. However, after two years those taking the pills containing the B vitamins began showing larger improvements in their memory test scores. Although more research is needed, this study seems to suggest there may be some cognitive related benefits for certain individuals who take B vitamin supplements longer term.

Memory Loss Can Begin In Our Forties

A British study has found brain functions including memory can begin declining as early as the mid-forties and possibly earlier. This decline includes memory, reasoning and comprehension abilities. The results come from a 10-year study involving more than 7,000 British government workers. This study comes as a surprise to the medical community as researchers had originally expected to see no decline in cognitive functioning in those 45 to 49. They instead found a modest decline in mental reasoning in both males and females in this age range. As they evaluated older individuals, they found the cognitive declines even greater. Although, one third of those studied between the ages of 45 and 70 showed no loss in cognitive function and thus, not all aging individuals experience reduction in those cognitive abilities tested. Researchers did not include anyone younger than the age of 45 but based on these findings believe brain functions could actually begin declining in those younger than 45 years. Researchers believe that conditions negatively affecting cardiovascular function, including obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and smoking are likely associated with these cognitive deteriorations.

Back Pain Causes Memory Deficits
According to research, chronic back pain sufferers experience more than just discomfort, they may also experience significant problems with short-term memory. In this study, the short-term memory of 50 chronic back pain subjects were compared with the short-term memory of 50 pain-free subjects. The results showed chronic back pain subjects had significantly impaired short-term memory as compared with their pain-free counterparts. Researchers believed the short-term memory impairment was due to either the impact that pain and stress had on cognitive function and/or the side effects of steroid treatment that back pain sufferers may have been exposed to. We encourage those with back pain to immediately seek the services of a licensed chiropractor to ensure their back pain does not become chronic and does not begin to affect one’s memory.

Gain The Weight, Gain The Spinal Pain

A recent Norway study indicates that in both men and women obesity is strongly associated with chronic low back pain. The increased weight of being obese wreaks havoc on the spinal tissues that are placed under constant and increased stress due to the additional weight. Fortunately, most obesity is treatable and with loss of the additional weight, many experience significant improvements in their back pain complaints, not to mention the improvement or reversal of many other related health conditions. Fortunately, chiropractic care can still help before the additional weight comes off, or, if the additional weight cannot be lost. Chiropractors not only provide relief for many experiencing back pain due to obesity, but some additionally offer treatment programs directed at weight loss and strategies to improve one’s overall health. If you’ve got extra pounds to lose and are suffering from back problems, you deserve an opportunity to try chiropractic care!

Why chiropractic for Children?

Why Chiropractic Care for Children?

Why Should Children Have Chiropractic Care?

More and more parents are seeking chiropractic care for their children. Many spinal problems seen in adults began as early as birth. Even so called 'natural' birthing methods can stress an infant's spine and developing nerve system. The resulting irritation to the nerve system caused by spinal and cranial misalignment can be the cause of many newborn health complaints. Colic, breathing problems, nursing difficulties, sleep disturbances, allergic reactions and chronic infections can often be traced to nerve system stress.

Since significant spinal trauma can occur at birth, many parents have their newborns checked right away. As the infant grows, learning to hold up the head, sit, crawl and walk are all activities that affect spinal alignment and are important times to have a child checked by a Doctor of Chiropractic.

As the child begins to participate in regular childhood activities like skating or riding a bike, small yet significant spinal misalignments (subluxations) may occur. If neglected, the injuries during this period of rapid growth may lead to more serious problems later in life. Subtle trauma throughout childhood will affect the future development of the spine leading to impaired nervous system function. Any interference to the vital nerve system will adversely affect the body’s ability to function at its best.

One of the most common reason parents seek care for their child is trauma from an injury of some sort. These misalignments may or may not result in immediate pain or symptoms. Regular chiropractic checkups can identify potential spinal injury from these traumas, make the correction early in life and help avoid many of the health complaints seen later in adults. Proper spinal hygiene is an important key to better health.

Another sought out reason for care is the resolution of a particular symptom or condition. Parents seek care for conditions such as colic, ear infections, asthma, allergies and headaches (to name a few) because they have heard from other parents that chiropractic care can help.

It is important to understand that the doctor of chiropractic does not treat conditions or diseases. The expertise of the chiropractor is in checking the child’s spine for misalignments that impair nervous system function therefore affecting overall body function. The bones of the spine, the vertebrae, house and protect the spinal cord. The spinal cord is an extension of the brain and carries information from the brain to the body parts and back to the brain again. Subluxations interfere with the nerves’ ability to transmit this vital information.

The nerve system controls and coordinates the function of all the systems in the body: circulatory, respiratory, digestive, hormonal, eliminative and immune system. Any aspect of health may be impaired by nerve interference. The chiropractic adjustment restores nerve system function allowing the body the ability to express a greater state of health and well-being.

The doctor of chiropractic will take a case history and perform a chiropractic exam to determine if spinal subluxations exist. Chiropractic adjusting procedures are modified to fit a child's size, weight, and unique spinal condition. They are both gentle and specific to the child’s developing spinal structures. Most parents report that their children enjoy their chiropractic adjustments and look forward to subsequent visits. They also report that their children experience a greater level of health while under regular chiropractic care.

To enhance your child’s ability to function in a greater state of health, we can help you find a doctor of chiropractic near you who is dedicated to serving children with the utmost of care. Once your family has experienced the many benefits of chiropractic care—please help us tell others!

4 essentials for life

                                                               Drs. Baum and Braun speaks:

                                               The 4 essentials to Life:

There have been found to be four basic essentials to life, as we know it.  The difference in excellence of these four things gives way to a respective quality of life.  Of course, it is left up to you to choose this higher quality, leading you to live longer and happier, instead of just existing!

Food ~ the body can live approximately 30 days without food. The nutrients gained from food give the body energy, supplying fuel for movement as well as healing and self-sustaining actions, (ex. Breathing, blood flow, muscle contractions, etc).  It is the quality of this food that determines how much nutrition the body receives.  Also determined by this factor, are what toxins the body must "weed out" in order to gain nutrition.  Many processed foods today lack nutrition altogether, many vegetables and fruits are covered in pesticides or are genetically engineered.  This just presents the body with yet another obstacle, taking away valuable energy from the body to rid itself of such toxic junk.  Make a choice, choose organic unprocessed foods, the way nature makes them, and minimize the toxins in your lifestyle.

Water ~ the body can live approximately 4 days without water.

You body has an average of 60 to 70% total make up of water.  Your brain is 83%, muscles 75%, and bones 22%.  Infants are approximately 70 to 80% water.  So really we all just need to drink more, but what about the quality?  There are things lurking in our water supplies today.  In fact many cities send out alerts as to the local water contents.  It is best to start drinking filtered water, and because your skin is an absorptive organ, possibly filter the water in which you bathe!

Air ~ the body can only live for a matter of minutes without air (about 4min.).

Some people have trained hard to gain larger lung capacity.  However the world record for holding ones breath is still a matter of minutes.  It is the oxygen in our air that allows the body to thrive, a major part of the chemical cycle that produces energy for all the body's functions.  Do your part to help keep the air as clean as possible!

~ And Nerve Supply ~

The body can only live a fraction of a second without nerve supply!

The Nervous System has two main parts, the Central and the Peripheral systems.  The entire nervous system acts as a master system, it controls everything that you do, and don't think about doing.  That is to say, not a single thing happens without your nervous system first initiating an action.  In fact it is so important that it is the first thing that is created when a fetus is growing and it is entirely encased in bone for protection.  Every action, healing, hearing, seeing, breathing, blood flow, temperature maintenance, originates in the brain.  A message travels down the spinal column and out into the body.  Subluxations block and slow these messages, and the only way to remove the interference caused by subluxations is to get adjusted.

It is about quality of life!   In order to be at 100%, your body must be functioning at 100%!  It all begins with your Nervous System!  Health comes from within!
