Why chiropractic for Children?

Why Chiropractic Care for Children?

Why Should Children Have Chiropractic Care?

More and more parents are seeking chiropractic care for their children. Many spinal problems seen in adults began as early as birth. Even so called 'natural' birthing methods can stress an infant's spine and developing nerve system. The resulting irritation to the nerve system caused by spinal and cranial misalignment can be the cause of many newborn health complaints. Colic, breathing problems, nursing difficulties, sleep disturbances, allergic reactions and chronic infections can often be traced to nerve system stress.

Since significant spinal trauma can occur at birth, many parents have their newborns checked right away. As the infant grows, learning to hold up the head, sit, crawl and walk are all activities that affect spinal alignment and are important times to have a child checked by a Doctor of Chiropractic.

As the child begins to participate in regular childhood activities like skating or riding a bike, small yet significant spinal misalignments (subluxations) may occur. If neglected, the injuries during this period of rapid growth may lead to more serious problems later in life. Subtle trauma throughout childhood will affect the future development of the spine leading to impaired nervous system function. Any interference to the vital nerve system will adversely affect the body’s ability to function at its best.

One of the most common reason parents seek care for their child is trauma from an injury of some sort. These misalignments may or may not result in immediate pain or symptoms. Regular chiropractic checkups can identify potential spinal injury from these traumas, make the correction early in life and help avoid many of the health complaints seen later in adults. Proper spinal hygiene is an important key to better health.

Another sought out reason for care is the resolution of a particular symptom or condition. Parents seek care for conditions such as colic, ear infections, asthma, allergies and headaches (to name a few) because they have heard from other parents that chiropractic care can help.

It is important to understand that the doctor of chiropractic does not treat conditions or diseases. The expertise of the chiropractor is in checking the child’s spine for misalignments that impair nervous system function therefore affecting overall body function. The bones of the spine, the vertebrae, house and protect the spinal cord. The spinal cord is an extension of the brain and carries information from the brain to the body parts and back to the brain again. Subluxations interfere with the nerves’ ability to transmit this vital information.

The nerve system controls and coordinates the function of all the systems in the body: circulatory, respiratory, digestive, hormonal, eliminative and immune system. Any aspect of health may be impaired by nerve interference. The chiropractic adjustment restores nerve system function allowing the body the ability to express a greater state of health and well-being.

The doctor of chiropractic will take a case history and perform a chiropractic exam to determine if spinal subluxations exist. Chiropractic adjusting procedures are modified to fit a child's size, weight, and unique spinal condition. They are both gentle and specific to the child’s developing spinal structures. Most parents report that their children enjoy their chiropractic adjustments and look forward to subsequent visits. They also report that their children experience a greater level of health while under regular chiropractic care.

To enhance your child’s ability to function in a greater state of health, we can help you find a doctor of chiropractic near you who is dedicated to serving children with the utmost of care. Once your family has experienced the many benefits of chiropractic care—please help us tell others!

Doctors of Chiropractic Offer Smokers Key Support in Their Quest to Quit

Arlington, Va. —Doctors of chiropractic (DCs) are ready and willing to provide key support to patients who are trying to quit smoking and develop a healthier lifestyle, according to the American Chiropractic Association (ACA). This reminder comes as communities across the country this week observe National Public Health Week (NPHW), which promotes smoking cessation on Tuesday, April 3.

The theme of NPHW 2012—"A Healthier America Begins Today: Join the Movement"—promotes the importance of prevention and wellness in health care. Likewise, the chiropractic profession has for more than 100 years promoted the value of prevention as a key component of health and wellness. In addition to providing expert musculoskeletal care, DCs routinely serve as "health coaches" to their patients—which may include helping them to quit smoking.

According to the Surgeon General, tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable and premature death, killing an estimated 443,000 Americans each year. ACA offers the following advice to anyone who wants to quit:

  • Make a serious mental commitment to quitting.
  • Set a quit date.
  • Get rid of all cigarettes and smoking accessories (such as ashtrays) in your home, car, and other places where you might be tempted to smoke.
  • Do not let people smoke in your home.
  • Get support and encouragement from family, friends, co-workers and former smokers and consider joining a former smokers’ support group.
  • When tempted, perform tasks that could help distract you: go for a walk, brush your teeth, exercise, or take a bath.

"Most smokers must kick the habit more than once to finally quit. If you are unsuccessful the first or second time, try again. Don't see the initial attempts as failures, but as opportunities to learn what doesn't work," said ACA President Dr. Keith Overland. "With commitment and perseverance, you will succeed. Your family, friends and most of all, your body will thank you."

For online support, those trying to quit smoking may visit http://www.smokefree.gov/Default.aspx.
Since 1995, when the first full week of April was declared NPHW, communities across the country have celebrated and recognized the contributions of public health and highlighted issues that are important to improving the public’s health.

The American Public Health Association (APHA) serves as the organizer of NPHW and develops a national campaign to educate the public, policy-makers and practitioners about issues related to that year's theme. APHA creates comprehensive planning, organizing and outreach materials that can be used during and after the week to raise awareness. APHA has featured a section devoted to chiropractic and the role that DCs play in public health since 1995.

The American Chiropractic Association (ACA), based in Arlington, Va., is the largest professional association in the United States representing doctors of chiropractic. ACA promotes the highest standards of patient care and ethics, and supports research that contributes to the health and well-being of millions of chiropractic patients. Visit www.acatoday.org.

Chiropractic Management Of A Tremor/Migraine Case

While there are many philosophies and beliefs in regards to chiropractic care and exactly how everything works and what conditions chiropractic care can affect, there are also those clinical results experienced by chiropractic patients that are important to share. One such experience involves a case study of a 39-year old woman who presented to a chiropractor with migraine headaches and essential tremors - a slowly progressive neurological disorder associated with tremors of the arms, hands and/or head that is apparent during voluntary movements such as eating and writing. She had suffered from migraines since the age of 10 and was diagnosed with an essential tremor since the year 2000. During her presentation to the chiropractor she had been experiencing episodes of tremors and migraines approximately 2 to 3 times per week. After receiving a thorough chiropractic evaluation, she was treated with a safe, high-velocity, low-amplitude chiropractic spinal manipulation to her upper neck region. According to the case study, there was improvement in her tremors and migraine headaches following her initial chiropractic treatment, with a sustained improvement after 4 months of care. Chiropractic care has helped millions of people not only get out of pain, but similar to this case study, successfully manage or resolve their ongoing health issues that may have existed for many years. We encourage those who are suffering from pain and other health problems to contact their local chiropractor today for a consultation.

Frequent Breaks and Position Changes Good For Your Back
New research confirms the obvious, stoop over and don't move much and you'll significantly increase your risk for lower back pain. In a newly released study, Hong Kong researchers evaluated workers at a school for severely handicapped individuals. Workers wore accelerometers attached to their trunks - devises that measure and track the degrees of trunk flexion. Researchers discovered those workers experiencing back pain were spending more time with their trunks in the same position as well as more time in bent positions of more than 10 degrees of flexion. According to researchers, "Rest activities such as standing up from stooping and walking for a short distance are suggested to promote the cyclic muscular contraction and relaxation that facilitate the nourishment of spinal tissues and provide periodic rest to the muscles." Thus, it's important to minimize working in bent over positions and take frequent back breaks and breathers. Think of the ligaments, muscles and other soft tissue structures of the back as an elastic band. When you over stretch an elastic band or maintain its stretched position for an extended period, it weakens, loses its ability to return to normal and ultimately can snap due to the excessive strains and stresses placed upon it. However, unlike an elastic band your back doesn't come in a 100 pack at your local office supply store. You have one back for life. Call your local chiropractor today and learn how to treat your back with the respect it deserves.

Move To Live

According to new research, those who spend more time sitting and being sedentary as compared with those who are active and moving around are more likely to die from any cause. Data from the study also indicates that this holds true even for those individuals who obtain adequate amounts of exercise. It appears that even for those who exercise regularly, sitting or reclining excessively on a regular basis is simply bad for your health. In evaluating more than 200,000 adults aged 45 and older, those who reported sitting for 11 or more hours per day were 40 percent more likely to die during the study than those sitting less than 4 hours per day. Walking and moving around removes blood glucose and fats circulating in the blood stream whereas sitting is far less effective at accomplishing this. Researchers recommend frequent "get up and move around" breaks throughout the day for those who must sit for long periods of time, especially those working a desk job. In other words, move to live!

Gain The Weight, Gain The Spinal Pain

A recent Norway study indicates that in both men and women obesity is strongly associated with chronic low back pain. The increased weight of being obese wreaks havoc on the spinal tissues that are placed under constant and increased stress due to the additional weight. Fortunately, most obesity is treatable and with loss of the additional weight, many experience significant improvements in their back pain complaints, not to mention the improvement or reversal of many other related health conditions. Fortunately, chiropractic care can still help before the additional weight comes off, or, if the additional weight cannot be lost. Chiropractors not only provide relief for many experiencing back pain due to obesity, but some additionally offer treatment programs directed at weight loss and strategies to improve one’s overall health. If you’ve got extra pounds to lose and are suffering from back problems, you deserve an opportunity to try chiropractic care!

4 essentials for life

                                                               Drs. Baum and Braun speaks:

                                               The 4 essentials to Life:

There have been found to be four basic essentials to life, as we know it.  The difference in excellence of these four things gives way to a respective quality of life.  Of course, it is left up to you to choose this higher quality, leading you to live longer and happier, instead of just existing!

Food ~ the body can live approximately 30 days without food. The nutrients gained from food give the body energy, supplying fuel for movement as well as healing and self-sustaining actions, (ex. Breathing, blood flow, muscle contractions, etc).  It is the quality of this food that determines how much nutrition the body receives.  Also determined by this factor, are what toxins the body must "weed out" in order to gain nutrition.  Many processed foods today lack nutrition altogether, many vegetables and fruits are covered in pesticides or are genetically engineered.  This just presents the body with yet another obstacle, taking away valuable energy from the body to rid itself of such toxic junk.  Make a choice, choose organic unprocessed foods, the way nature makes them, and minimize the toxins in your lifestyle.

Water ~ the body can live approximately 4 days without water.

You body has an average of 60 to 70% total make up of water.  Your brain is 83%, muscles 75%, and bones 22%.  Infants are approximately 70 to 80% water.  So really we all just need to drink more, but what about the quality?  There are things lurking in our water supplies today.  In fact many cities send out alerts as to the local water contents.  It is best to start drinking filtered water, and because your skin is an absorptive organ, possibly filter the water in which you bathe!

Air ~ the body can only live for a matter of minutes without air (about 4min.).

Some people have trained hard to gain larger lung capacity.  However the world record for holding ones breath is still a matter of minutes.  It is the oxygen in our air that allows the body to thrive, a major part of the chemical cycle that produces energy for all the body's functions.  Do your part to help keep the air as clean as possible!

~ And Nerve Supply ~

The body can only live a fraction of a second without nerve supply!

The Nervous System has two main parts, the Central and the Peripheral systems.  The entire nervous system acts as a master system, it controls everything that you do, and don't think about doing.  That is to say, not a single thing happens without your nervous system first initiating an action.  In fact it is so important that it is the first thing that is created when a fetus is growing and it is entirely encased in bone for protection.  Every action, healing, hearing, seeing, breathing, blood flow, temperature maintenance, originates in the brain.  A message travels down the spinal column and out into the body.  Subluxations block and slow these messages, and the only way to remove the interference caused by subluxations is to get adjusted.

It is about quality of life!   In order to be at 100%, your body must be functioning at 100%!  It all begins with your Nervous System!  Health comes from within!
