4 essentials for life

                                                               Drs. Baum and Braun speaks:

                                               The 4 essentials to Life:

There have been found to be four basic essentials to life, as we know it.  The difference in excellence of these four things gives way to a respective quality of life.  Of course, it is left up to you to choose this higher quality, leading you to live longer and happier, instead of just existing!

Food ~ the body can live approximately 30 days without food. The nutrients gained from food give the body energy, supplying fuel for movement as well as healing and self-sustaining actions, (ex. Breathing, blood flow, muscle contractions, etc).  It is the quality of this food that determines how much nutrition the body receives.  Also determined by this factor, are what toxins the body must "weed out" in order to gain nutrition.  Many processed foods today lack nutrition altogether, many vegetables and fruits are covered in pesticides or are genetically engineered.  This just presents the body with yet another obstacle, taking away valuable energy from the body to rid itself of such toxic junk.  Make a choice, choose organic unprocessed foods, the way nature makes them, and minimize the toxins in your lifestyle.

Water ~ the body can live approximately 4 days without water.

You body has an average of 60 to 70% total make up of water.  Your brain is 83%, muscles 75%, and bones 22%.  Infants are approximately 70 to 80% water.  So really we all just need to drink more, but what about the quality?  There are things lurking in our water supplies today.  In fact many cities send out alerts as to the local water contents.  It is best to start drinking filtered water, and because your skin is an absorptive organ, possibly filter the water in which you bathe!

Air ~ the body can only live for a matter of minutes without air (about 4min.).

Some people have trained hard to gain larger lung capacity.  However the world record for holding ones breath is still a matter of minutes.  It is the oxygen in our air that allows the body to thrive, a major part of the chemical cycle that produces energy for all the body's functions.  Do your part to help keep the air as clean as possible!

~ And Nerve Supply ~

The body can only live a fraction of a second without nerve supply!

The Nervous System has two main parts, the Central and the Peripheral systems.  The entire nervous system acts as a master system, it controls everything that you do, and don't think about doing.  That is to say, not a single thing happens without your nervous system first initiating an action.  In fact it is so important that it is the first thing that is created when a fetus is growing and it is entirely encased in bone for protection.  Every action, healing, hearing, seeing, breathing, blood flow, temperature maintenance, originates in the brain.  A message travels down the spinal column and out into the body.  Subluxations block and slow these messages, and the only way to remove the interference caused by subluxations is to get adjusted.

It is about quality of life!   In order to be at 100%, your body must be functioning at 100%!  It all begins with your Nervous System!  Health comes from within!

Why chiropractic for Children?

Why Chiropractic Care for Children?

Why Should Children Have Chiropractic Care?

More and more parents are seeking chiropractic care for their children. Many spinal problems seen in adults began as early as birth. Even so called 'natural' birthing methods can stress an infant's spine and developing nerve system. The resulting irritation to the nerve system caused by spinal and cranial misalignment can be the cause of many newborn health complaints. Colic, breathing problems, nursing difficulties, sleep disturbances, allergic reactions and chronic infections can often be traced to nerve system stress.

Since significant spinal trauma can occur at birth, many parents have their newborns checked right away. As the infant grows, learning to hold up the head, sit, crawl and walk are all activities that affect spinal alignment and are important times to have a child checked by a Doctor of Chiropractic.

As the child begins to participate in regular childhood activities like skating or riding a bike, small yet significant spinal misalignments (subluxations) may occur. If neglected, the injuries during this period of rapid growth may lead to more serious problems later in life. Subtle trauma throughout childhood will affect the future development of the spine leading to impaired nervous system function. Any interference to the vital nerve system will adversely affect the body’s ability to function at its best.

One of the most common reason parents seek care for their child is trauma from an injury of some sort. These misalignments may or may not result in immediate pain or symptoms. Regular chiropractic checkups can identify potential spinal injury from these traumas, make the correction early in life and help avoid many of the health complaints seen later in adults. Proper spinal hygiene is an important key to better health.

Another sought out reason for care is the resolution of a particular symptom or condition. Parents seek care for conditions such as colic, ear infections, asthma, allergies and headaches (to name a few) because they have heard from other parents that chiropractic care can help.

It is important to understand that the doctor of chiropractic does not treat conditions or diseases. The expertise of the chiropractor is in checking the child’s spine for misalignments that impair nervous system function therefore affecting overall body function. The bones of the spine, the vertebrae, house and protect the spinal cord. The spinal cord is an extension of the brain and carries information from the brain to the body parts and back to the brain again. Subluxations interfere with the nerves’ ability to transmit this vital information.

The nerve system controls and coordinates the function of all the systems in the body: circulatory, respiratory, digestive, hormonal, eliminative and immune system. Any aspect of health may be impaired by nerve interference. The chiropractic adjustment restores nerve system function allowing the body the ability to express a greater state of health and well-being.

The doctor of chiropractic will take a case history and perform a chiropractic exam to determine if spinal subluxations exist. Chiropractic adjusting procedures are modified to fit a child's size, weight, and unique spinal condition. They are both gentle and specific to the child’s developing spinal structures. Most parents report that their children enjoy their chiropractic adjustments and look forward to subsequent visits. They also report that their children experience a greater level of health while under regular chiropractic care.

To enhance your child’s ability to function in a greater state of health, we can help you find a doctor of chiropractic near you who is dedicated to serving children with the utmost of care. Once your family has experienced the many benefits of chiropractic care—please help us tell others!

Increasing Number of Children Receive Pediatric Chiropractic Care
A growing number of parents are adding pediatric chiropractic care as an integrative component of their children's health care regimen.

Survey data indicates that the percentage of chiropractic patients under 17 years of age has increased at least 8.5 percent since 1991, says the American Chiropractic Association. Further, a recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study indicated that nearly 3 percent of children in the United States were treated with chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation in 2007, making it the most common form of doctor-directed complementary or alternative medicine used by children.

According to Elise Hewitt, DC, a Portland-area doctor of chiropractic and president of the American Chiropractic Association's Pediatrics Council, chiropractic care isn't just for adults. Infants and children can benefit from spinal manipulation and other forms of chiropractic care just as much as their parents and grandparents.

"It's very important that a child have both a pediatrician and a pediatric chiropractor. A pediatric chiropractor is not there to replace the role of the pediatrician," says Dr. Hewitt. "The pediatrician provides medications when necessary and delivers care in times of serious illness and injury. A pediatric chiropractor is there for preventative wellness care and maintenance of the child's structure. The two are very complementary."

Studies are beginning to show that chiropractic can help children not only with typical back and neck pain complaints, but also with issues as varied as asthma, chronic ear infections, nursing difficulties, colic and bedwetting.

Chiropractic spinal manipulation is a highly skilled treatment, and in the case of children, very gentle. Doctors of chiropractic - commonly referred to as chiropractors - practice a hands-on, drug-free approach to health care that includes patient examination, diagnosis and treatment. Following their undergraduate education, doctors of chiropractic obtain a four-year degree consisting of more than 4,500 hours of study and clinical experience. Pediatric specialists receive additional post-doctorate training.

"The vast majority of parents report that their children enjoy their chiropractic adjustments and look forward to subsequent visits. They also report that their children experience a greater level of health while under regular chiropractic care,” Dr. Hewitt notes.

The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) is the nation's leading chiropractic organization representing more than 15,000 doctors of chiropractic and their patients. To find a chiropractor near you, visit the ACA's searchable member database at www.acatoday.org/DocSearch.

Chiropractic Effective For Myofascial Pain Syndrome & Trigger Points
A recent review of research was performed to identify the effectiveness of various treatments for the relief of Myofascial pain syndrome and myofascial trigger points. Myofascial pain syndrome is a chronic form of muscle pain characterized by sensitive points in the muscles called myofascial trigger points. These trigger points in the muscles can be painful when touched and the pain can spread throughout the affected muscle as well as radiate down the extremities. In this study, 112 articles were found matching the study's criteria and were reviewed. After evaluating these studies, researchers stated, "Moderately strong evidence supports manipulation and ischemic pressure for immediate pain relief at myofascial trigger points…". Manipulation is the primary treatment provided by chiropractors. Ischemic pressure another common technique utilized by chiropractors that involves applying manual, direct pressure to the trigger points to ultimately provide pain relief and reduction of trigger points. If you or another is suffering from sensitive areas in the muscles and/or you believe you could be suffering from myofascial pain syndrome, please contact our office today for a professional and caring consultation.

Relief For Knee Arthritis Sufferers
A new study published in the journal Arthritis & Rheumatism found chondroitin sulfate successful at reducing pain as well as reducing cartilage loss in the knee for subjects suffering from knee arthritis. Of the 622 subjects aged 45 to 80 years, the average subject was suffering from moderate knee pain due to arthritis. For a period of 2 years, subjects received either prescription-grade chondroitin sulfate or a placebo. Those receiving the chondroitin sulfate as compared with the placebo experienced notable pain relief as well as a 33 percent reduction in the likelihood of experiencing joint narrowing in the knee. While these findings are extremely promising for those suffering from arthritis of the knee and perhaps with arthritis of other joints, it should be noted that subjects were taking prescription-grade chondroitin sulfate and thus, results cannot necessarily be generalized to those chondroitin sulfate products currently being sold as dietary supplements. However, it does appear that the correct chondroitin sulfate can have beneficial effects in those suffering from various forms of arthritis.

Get Quality Sleep, Be Happy
According to researchers at the National Public Health Institute, those suffering from sleep quality issues are more likely to become dissatisfied with life as they grow older. It appears that lack of adequate sleep or adequate quality of sleep experience a significantly higher rate of dissatisfaction with life as they age. Also, it doesn't appear that those who become dissatisfied with life as they age have a similar correlation to sleep quality. While more research is needed, it's important to realize how essential it is to consistently give your body the rest it needs and strive to obtain sufficient amounts of quality rest and sleep.
