Simple Ankle/Foot Exercises Help Seniors
Researchers have found that a few simple ankle/foot exercises can significantly improve the lower extremity strength and balance of senior citizens. As we age, we lose strength and mobility as well as coordination and balance. These things, especially in the lower extremities, increase the risk of fall-type injuries and more or less, slow us down. New research shows that a few simple exercises performed for 15-minutes, 3-times per week can significantly improve ankle/foot strength and overall balance. The 15-minute exercise session consists of a 5-minute warm-up, 5 minutes of ankle flexion/extension exercises using therapeutic elastic bands, ending with a 5-minute cool down period. When compared with seniors who did not participate in the simple ankle/foot exercises, those performing the exercises experienced a significant improvement in functional mobility and balance. Seniors should be especially cautious and discuss the appropriateness and safety of exercise regimes with their primary care provider such as their local chiropractor prior to initiating any exercise program.

Stay Active To Stay Young
A new report in the Mayo Clinic Health Letter recommends staying active in order to reduce some of the discomforts associated with aging. While many tend to blame those stiff, aching joints and sore backs on their increasing age, experts believe that many of these aches and pains can be reduced if not eliminated by implementing an exercise regimen and/or simply remaining active. Other studies show exercise and physical activity help to lower the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes as well as improve energy and immune function. The experts also say it's never too late to start exercising. Be sure to consult with your chiropractor or other health care provider prior to implementing any new exercise regimen.

New Beds Offer Better Nights Rest
A new study finds replacing that old mattress could improve sleep quality and reduce sleep related back discomfort. Researchers recorded the reported back discomfort and sleep quality for 28 consecutive days with 30 female and 29 male subjects sleeping in their existing beds (average age of beds was 9.5 years old). Subject's beds were then replaced by new, medium-firm beds and again, their sleep quality and back discomfort were tracked. Researchers noted a significant improvement between pre and post test sleep quality and efficiency. Thus, if you feel that your bed has turned into a boxing ring for your body, perhaps it's time to consider a replacement. Of course, it's important to have yourself checked by a licensed chiropractor if you are experiencing any back pain or discomfort to ensure there isn't a more serious underlying condition present.

All VA Medical Facilities May Soon Offer Chiropractic
While 32 of the more than 150 VA health care facilities (those specifically providing health care services to our nation's veterans) offer chiropractic services, a new bill will require the VA to have a doctor of chiropractic on staff at all VA medical facilities by 2012. Integrating chiropractic treatment into the VA health care system would not only be cost-effective, it would also speed the recovery of many of the veterans returning from current operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. A January 2009 report from the Veterans Health Administration indicates that over 49 percent of veterans returning from the Middle East and Southwest Asia who have sought VA health care were treated for symptoms associated with musculoskeletal ailments - the top complaint of those tracked for the report. Chiropractors are experts in the care of musculoskeletal injuries offering a safe, effective, non-invasive hands on treatment approach. Currently, the bill (HR 1017) has been referred to the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs. To view the full text of HR 1017, click here. Contact your Member of Congress and urge them to co-sponsor HR 1017.

Why chiropractic for Children?

Why Chiropractic Care for Children?

Why Should Children Have Chiropractic Care?

More and more parents are seeking chiropractic care for their children. Many spinal problems seen in adults began as early as birth. Even so called 'natural' birthing methods can stress an infant's spine and developing nerve system. The resulting irritation to the nerve system caused by spinal and cranial misalignment can be the cause of many newborn health complaints. Colic, breathing problems, nursing difficulties, sleep disturbances, allergic reactions and chronic infections can often be traced to nerve system stress.

Since significant spinal trauma can occur at birth, many parents have their newborns checked right away. As the infant grows, learning to hold up the head, sit, crawl and walk are all activities that affect spinal alignment and are important times to have a child checked by a Doctor of Chiropractic.

As the child begins to participate in regular childhood activities like skating or riding a bike, small yet significant spinal misalignments (subluxations) may occur. If neglected, the injuries during this period of rapid growth may lead to more serious problems later in life. Subtle trauma throughout childhood will affect the future development of the spine leading to impaired nervous system function. Any interference to the vital nerve system will adversely affect the body’s ability to function at its best.

One of the most common reason parents seek care for their child is trauma from an injury of some sort. These misalignments may or may not result in immediate pain or symptoms. Regular chiropractic checkups can identify potential spinal injury from these traumas, make the correction early in life and help avoid many of the health complaints seen later in adults. Proper spinal hygiene is an important key to better health.

Another sought out reason for care is the resolution of a particular symptom or condition. Parents seek care for conditions such as colic, ear infections, asthma, allergies and headaches (to name a few) because they have heard from other parents that chiropractic care can help.

It is important to understand that the doctor of chiropractic does not treat conditions or diseases. The expertise of the chiropractor is in checking the child’s spine for misalignments that impair nervous system function therefore affecting overall body function. The bones of the spine, the vertebrae, house and protect the spinal cord. The spinal cord is an extension of the brain and carries information from the brain to the body parts and back to the brain again. Subluxations interfere with the nerves’ ability to transmit this vital information.

The nerve system controls and coordinates the function of all the systems in the body: circulatory, respiratory, digestive, hormonal, eliminative and immune system. Any aspect of health may be impaired by nerve interference. The chiropractic adjustment restores nerve system function allowing the body the ability to express a greater state of health and well-being.

The doctor of chiropractic will take a case history and perform a chiropractic exam to determine if spinal subluxations exist. Chiropractic adjusting procedures are modified to fit a child's size, weight, and unique spinal condition. They are both gentle and specific to the child’s developing spinal structures. Most parents report that their children enjoy their chiropractic adjustments and look forward to subsequent visits. They also report that their children experience a greater level of health while under regular chiropractic care.

To enhance your child’s ability to function in a greater state of health, we can help you find a doctor of chiropractic near you who is dedicated to serving children with the utmost of care. Once your family has experienced the many benefits of chiropractic care—please help us tell others!

4 essentials for life

                                                               Drs. Baum and Braun speaks:

                                               The 4 essentials to Life:

There have been found to be four basic essentials to life, as we know it.  The difference in excellence of these four things gives way to a respective quality of life.  Of course, it is left up to you to choose this higher quality, leading you to live longer and happier, instead of just existing!

Food ~ the body can live approximately 30 days without food. The nutrients gained from food give the body energy, supplying fuel for movement as well as healing and self-sustaining actions, (ex. Breathing, blood flow, muscle contractions, etc).  It is the quality of this food that determines how much nutrition the body receives.  Also determined by this factor, are what toxins the body must "weed out" in order to gain nutrition.  Many processed foods today lack nutrition altogether, many vegetables and fruits are covered in pesticides or are genetically engineered.  This just presents the body with yet another obstacle, taking away valuable energy from the body to rid itself of such toxic junk.  Make a choice, choose organic unprocessed foods, the way nature makes them, and minimize the toxins in your lifestyle.

Water ~ the body can live approximately 4 days without water.

You body has an average of 60 to 70% total make up of water.  Your brain is 83%, muscles 75%, and bones 22%.  Infants are approximately 70 to 80% water.  So really we all just need to drink more, but what about the quality?  There are things lurking in our water supplies today.  In fact many cities send out alerts as to the local water contents.  It is best to start drinking filtered water, and because your skin is an absorptive organ, possibly filter the water in which you bathe!

Air ~ the body can only live for a matter of minutes without air (about 4min.).

Some people have trained hard to gain larger lung capacity.  However the world record for holding ones breath is still a matter of minutes.  It is the oxygen in our air that allows the body to thrive, a major part of the chemical cycle that produces energy for all the body's functions.  Do your part to help keep the air as clean as possible!

~ And Nerve Supply ~

The body can only live a fraction of a second without nerve supply!

The Nervous System has two main parts, the Central and the Peripheral systems.  The entire nervous system acts as a master system, it controls everything that you do, and don't think about doing.  That is to say, not a single thing happens without your nervous system first initiating an action.  In fact it is so important that it is the first thing that is created when a fetus is growing and it is entirely encased in bone for protection.  Every action, healing, hearing, seeing, breathing, blood flow, temperature maintenance, originates in the brain.  A message travels down the spinal column and out into the body.  Subluxations block and slow these messages, and the only way to remove the interference caused by subluxations is to get adjusted.

It is about quality of life!   In order to be at 100%, your body must be functioning at 100%!  It all begins with your Nervous System!  Health comes from within!
