Chiropractic Spinal Manipulation Improves Golf Swing Performance

If you've ever golfed, you'll likely know the importance of a full golf swing. What if something as safe, natural and beneficial as a chiropractic care could improve that golf swing? Well, it appears findings from a new study show just that. For a growing number of athletes, chiropractic care has been the tool they’ve used to increase their overall performance in their particular sport, including golfers. In this most recent study, 43 golfers were assigned to one of two groups - either a program of stretching or a program of stretching combined with chiropractic spinal manipulation.  Average age, handicap and initial swing were comparable between the two groups and various golf maneuvers were evaluated pre and post treatment once per week for 4 weeks. No improvement of full-swing performance was observed with the stretch only group. However, researchers did find improvement in the stretching plus chiropractic spinal manipulation group. While the number of golfers evaluated was limited, the findings are exciting and indicate like so many athletes are claiming that chiropractic care allows them to achieve optimal performance in additional to optimal health.

Infant Colic and Chiropractic

Results obtained from a recent study indicate chiropractic care may have a positive effect on the long-term sequelae of infantile colic. In the study, researchers evaluated the behavioral and sleep disturbances experienced by two groups of post-colicky toddlers - those who were previously treated with chiropractic care for their infantile colic (117 total) and those who had not received chiropractic as an infant while suffering from infantile colic (111 total). Those toddlers who were treated with chiropractic care for colic were twice as likely to not experience long-term sequelae of infant colic, such as temper tantrums and frequent nocturnal waking than those who were not treated with chiropractic care as colicky infants. In other words, parents of the infants treated with chiropractic care for excessive crying did not report as many difficult behavioral and sleep patterns of their toddlers.

Overweight Children At Risk For Spinal Disease

Most tend to believe spinal related disease such as disc herniation and degenerative disc disease are diseases reserved for adults and the elderly. However, a new research study now finds these diseases are also present in young children, especially those with weight/obesity issues. "Back pain and degenerative disc disease are yet another problem associated with obesity in children, along with type 2 diabetes," Dr. Judah G. Burns, of The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore in New York City reported at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA 2009). "Disc herniation and spinal disease are generally thought of as a problem of older people, but we’re seeing it in obese youngsters, too. This is the first study to show an association between increased body mass index and disc abnormalities in children," Burns noted.

The ACA Offers "12 Days of Health and Wellness" for Healthy, Happy Season

The upcoming holiday season is full of reasons for good cheer, but the added demands of the season can also stress the capacities of our bodies. Research shows that stress and unhealthy behaviors contribute to some of our country's biggest health problems such as obesity, heart disease and diabetes. This stress can also build up inside the body and manifest as back pain, neck pain or headaches...making matters even worse. Doctors of chiropractic are experts in spinal adjustment and other manual therapies that can relieve the aches and pains caused by holiday stress. They also provide nutrition counseling, exercise recommendations, ergonomic tips and other advice to promote good health year-round. The American Chiropractic Association (ACA), in an effort to promote health and wellness this holiday season, offers "12 Days of Health and Wellness," a campaign designed to give consumers tips on ways to manage the holidays more healthfully.  Each day focuses on a different topic such as choosing nutritious foods, getting enough sleep, and stretching after tree-trimming or gift wrapping to help ease back pain. "The holidays are synonymous with frenzied activities, parties, shopping and stress, so it is imperative that people take steps to address these issues in healthier ways," said ACA President Rick McMichael, DC. "It's the perfect time to use ACA's tips to take control of your health and to discover chiropractic's natural approach to wellness. A doctor of chiropractic can customize a wellness program that's right for you."

Why chiropractic for Children?

Why Chiropractic Care for Children?

Why Should Children Have Chiropractic Care?

More and more parents are seeking chiropractic care for their children. Many spinal problems seen in adults began as early as birth. Even so called 'natural' birthing methods can stress an infant's spine and developing nerve system. The resulting irritation to the nerve system caused by spinal and cranial misalignment can be the cause of many newborn health complaints. Colic, breathing problems, nursing difficulties, sleep disturbances, allergic reactions and chronic infections can often be traced to nerve system stress.

Since significant spinal trauma can occur at birth, many parents have their newborns checked right away. As the infant grows, learning to hold up the head, sit, crawl and walk are all activities that affect spinal alignment and are important times to have a child checked by a Doctor of Chiropractic.

As the child begins to participate in regular childhood activities like skating or riding a bike, small yet significant spinal misalignments (subluxations) may occur. If neglected, the injuries during this period of rapid growth may lead to more serious problems later in life. Subtle trauma throughout childhood will affect the future development of the spine leading to impaired nervous system function. Any interference to the vital nerve system will adversely affect the body’s ability to function at its best.

One of the most common reason parents seek care for their child is trauma from an injury of some sort. These misalignments may or may not result in immediate pain or symptoms. Regular chiropractic checkups can identify potential spinal injury from these traumas, make the correction early in life and help avoid many of the health complaints seen later in adults. Proper spinal hygiene is an important key to better health.

Another sought out reason for care is the resolution of a particular symptom or condition. Parents seek care for conditions such as colic, ear infections, asthma, allergies and headaches (to name a few) because they have heard from other parents that chiropractic care can help.

It is important to understand that the doctor of chiropractic does not treat conditions or diseases. The expertise of the chiropractor is in checking the child’s spine for misalignments that impair nervous system function therefore affecting overall body function. The bones of the spine, the vertebrae, house and protect the spinal cord. The spinal cord is an extension of the brain and carries information from the brain to the body parts and back to the brain again. Subluxations interfere with the nerves’ ability to transmit this vital information.

The nerve system controls and coordinates the function of all the systems in the body: circulatory, respiratory, digestive, hormonal, eliminative and immune system. Any aspect of health may be impaired by nerve interference. The chiropractic adjustment restores nerve system function allowing the body the ability to express a greater state of health and well-being.

The doctor of chiropractic will take a case history and perform a chiropractic exam to determine if spinal subluxations exist. Chiropractic adjusting procedures are modified to fit a child's size, weight, and unique spinal condition. They are both gentle and specific to the child’s developing spinal structures. Most parents report that their children enjoy their chiropractic adjustments and look forward to subsequent visits. They also report that their children experience a greater level of health while under regular chiropractic care.

To enhance your child’s ability to function in a greater state of health, we can help you find a doctor of chiropractic near you who is dedicated to serving children with the utmost of care. Once your family has experienced the many benefits of chiropractic care—please help us tell others!

4 essentials for life

                                                               Drs. Baum and Braun speaks:

                                               The 4 essentials to Life:

There have been found to be four basic essentials to life, as we know it.  The difference in excellence of these four things gives way to a respective quality of life.  Of course, it is left up to you to choose this higher quality, leading you to live longer and happier, instead of just existing!

Food ~ the body can live approximately 30 days without food. The nutrients gained from food give the body energy, supplying fuel for movement as well as healing and self-sustaining actions, (ex. Breathing, blood flow, muscle contractions, etc).  It is the quality of this food that determines how much nutrition the body receives.  Also determined by this factor, are what toxins the body must "weed out" in order to gain nutrition.  Many processed foods today lack nutrition altogether, many vegetables and fruits are covered in pesticides or are genetically engineered.  This just presents the body with yet another obstacle, taking away valuable energy from the body to rid itself of such toxic junk.  Make a choice, choose organic unprocessed foods, the way nature makes them, and minimize the toxins in your lifestyle.

Water ~ the body can live approximately 4 days without water.

You body has an average of 60 to 70% total make up of water.  Your brain is 83%, muscles 75%, and bones 22%.  Infants are approximately 70 to 80% water.  So really we all just need to drink more, but what about the quality?  There are things lurking in our water supplies today.  In fact many cities send out alerts as to the local water contents.  It is best to start drinking filtered water, and because your skin is an absorptive organ, possibly filter the water in which you bathe!

Air ~ the body can only live for a matter of minutes without air (about 4min.).

Some people have trained hard to gain larger lung capacity.  However the world record for holding ones breath is still a matter of minutes.  It is the oxygen in our air that allows the body to thrive, a major part of the chemical cycle that produces energy for all the body's functions.  Do your part to help keep the air as clean as possible!

~ And Nerve Supply ~

The body can only live a fraction of a second without nerve supply!

The Nervous System has two main parts, the Central and the Peripheral systems.  The entire nervous system acts as a master system, it controls everything that you do, and don't think about doing.  That is to say, not a single thing happens without your nervous system first initiating an action.  In fact it is so important that it is the first thing that is created when a fetus is growing and it is entirely encased in bone for protection.  Every action, healing, hearing, seeing, breathing, blood flow, temperature maintenance, originates in the brain.  A message travels down the spinal column and out into the body.  Subluxations block and slow these messages, and the only way to remove the interference caused by subluxations is to get adjusted.

It is about quality of life!   In order to be at 100%, your body must be functioning at 100%!  It all begins with your Nervous System!  Health comes from within!
