4 essentials for life

                                                               Drs. Baum and Braun speaks:

                                               The 4 essentials to Life:

There have been found to be four basic essentials to life, as we know it.  The difference in excellence of these four things gives way to a respective quality of life.  Of course, it is left up to you to choose this higher quality, leading you to live longer and happier, instead of just existing!

Food ~ the body can live approximately 30 days without food. The nutrients gained from food give the body energy, supplying fuel for movement as well as healing and self-sustaining actions, (ex. Breathing, blood flow, muscle contractions, etc).  It is the quality of this food that determines how much nutrition the body receives.  Also determined by this factor, are what toxins the body must "weed out" in order to gain nutrition.  Many processed foods today lack nutrition altogether, many vegetables and fruits are covered in pesticides or are genetically engineered.  This just presents the body with yet another obstacle, taking away valuable energy from the body to rid itself of such toxic junk.  Make a choice, choose organic unprocessed foods, the way nature makes them, and minimize the toxins in your lifestyle.

Water ~ the body can live approximately 4 days without water.

You body has an average of 60 to 70% total make up of water.  Your brain is 83%, muscles 75%, and bones 22%.  Infants are approximately 70 to 80% water.  So really we all just need to drink more, but what about the quality?  There are things lurking in our water supplies today.  In fact many cities send out alerts as to the local water contents.  It is best to start drinking filtered water, and because your skin is an absorptive organ, possibly filter the water in which you bathe!

Air ~ the body can only live for a matter of minutes without air (about 4min.).

Some people have trained hard to gain larger lung capacity.  However the world record for holding ones breath is still a matter of minutes.  It is the oxygen in our air that allows the body to thrive, a major part of the chemical cycle that produces energy for all the body's functions.  Do your part to help keep the air as clean as possible!

~ And Nerve Supply ~

The body can only live a fraction of a second without nerve supply!

The Nervous System has two main parts, the Central and the Peripheral systems.  The entire nervous system acts as a master system, it controls everything that you do, and don't think about doing.  That is to say, not a single thing happens without your nervous system first initiating an action.  In fact it is so important that it is the first thing that is created when a fetus is growing and it is entirely encased in bone for protection.  Every action, healing, hearing, seeing, breathing, blood flow, temperature maintenance, originates in the brain.  A message travels down the spinal column and out into the body.  Subluxations block and slow these messages, and the only way to remove the interference caused by subluxations is to get adjusted.

It is about quality of life!   In order to be at 100%, your body must be functioning at 100%!  It all begins with your Nervous System!  Health comes from within!

Why chiropractic for Children?

Why Chiropractic Care for Children?

Why Should Children Have Chiropractic Care?

More and more parents are seeking chiropractic care for their children. Many spinal problems seen in adults began as early as birth. Even so called 'natural' birthing methods can stress an infant's spine and developing nerve system. The resulting irritation to the nerve system caused by spinal and cranial misalignment can be the cause of many newborn health complaints. Colic, breathing problems, nursing difficulties, sleep disturbances, allergic reactions and chronic infections can often be traced to nerve system stress.

Since significant spinal trauma can occur at birth, many parents have their newborns checked right away. As the infant grows, learning to hold up the head, sit, crawl and walk are all activities that affect spinal alignment and are important times to have a child checked by a Doctor of Chiropractic.

As the child begins to participate in regular childhood activities like skating or riding a bike, small yet significant spinal misalignments (subluxations) may occur. If neglected, the injuries during this period of rapid growth may lead to more serious problems later in life. Subtle trauma throughout childhood will affect the future development of the spine leading to impaired nervous system function. Any interference to the vital nerve system will adversely affect the body’s ability to function at its best.

One of the most common reason parents seek care for their child is trauma from an injury of some sort. These misalignments may or may not result in immediate pain or symptoms. Regular chiropractic checkups can identify potential spinal injury from these traumas, make the correction early in life and help avoid many of the health complaints seen later in adults. Proper spinal hygiene is an important key to better health.

Another sought out reason for care is the resolution of a particular symptom or condition. Parents seek care for conditions such as colic, ear infections, asthma, allergies and headaches (to name a few) because they have heard from other parents that chiropractic care can help.

It is important to understand that the doctor of chiropractic does not treat conditions or diseases. The expertise of the chiropractor is in checking the child’s spine for misalignments that impair nervous system function therefore affecting overall body function. The bones of the spine, the vertebrae, house and protect the spinal cord. The spinal cord is an extension of the brain and carries information from the brain to the body parts and back to the brain again. Subluxations interfere with the nerves’ ability to transmit this vital information.

The nerve system controls and coordinates the function of all the systems in the body: circulatory, respiratory, digestive, hormonal, eliminative and immune system. Any aspect of health may be impaired by nerve interference. The chiropractic adjustment restores nerve system function allowing the body the ability to express a greater state of health and well-being.

The doctor of chiropractic will take a case history and perform a chiropractic exam to determine if spinal subluxations exist. Chiropractic adjusting procedures are modified to fit a child's size, weight, and unique spinal condition. They are both gentle and specific to the child’s developing spinal structures. Most parents report that their children enjoy their chiropractic adjustments and look forward to subsequent visits. They also report that their children experience a greater level of health while under regular chiropractic care.

To enhance your child’s ability to function in a greater state of health, we can help you find a doctor of chiropractic near you who is dedicated to serving children with the utmost of care. Once your family has experienced the many benefits of chiropractic care—please help us tell others!

Gain The Weight, Gain The Spinal Pain

A recent Norway study indicates that in both men and women obesity is strongly associated with chronic low back pain. The increased weight of being obese wreaks havoc on the spinal tissues that are placed under constant and increased stress due to the additional weight. Fortunately, most obesity is treatable and with loss of the additional weight, many experience significant improvements in their back pain complaints, not to mention the improvement or reversal of many other related health conditions. Fortunately, chiropractic care can still help before the additional weight comes off, or, if the additional weight cannot be lost. Chiropractors not only provide relief for many experiencing back pain due to obesity, but some additionally offer treatment programs directed at weight loss and strategies to improve one’s overall health. If you’ve got extra pounds to lose and are suffering from back problems, you deserve an opportunity to try chiropractic care!

Chiropractic Management of Postsurgical Lumbar Spine Pain

A percentage of individuals who undergo spinal surgery can experience mild to debilitating postsurgical spinal pain. This is one of several potential side effects of undergoing the knife. Researchers recently set out to evaluate the success of chiropractic care in managing postsurgical spinal pain in patients. In a retrospective study, researchers reviewed 32 cases of chiropractic care delivered to patients suffering from postsurgical lumbar spine pain. To be included, patients must have been treated with chiropractic care for a minimum of 2 weeks and undergone pre and post-treatment pain measurement evaluations to determine the overall change in their pain levels. Findings indicated the mean pain score was lowered from 6.4 to 2.3 out of 10 after their course of chiropractic care. According to the researchers, the reduction in pain was most remarkable in patients who underwent a surgery that combined lumbar discectomy, fusion, and/or laminectomy, with an average pain reduction of 5.7 of 10. Importantly, no adverse events were reported for any of these postsurgical patients who received chiropractic care. If you've had spinal surgery and are now suffering from postsurgical pain or are considering surgery, why not call your local doctor of chiropractic today. Your skilled evaluation will be safe, informative and there's no obligation.

Packed Lunches Pose A Health Risk

If you're a parent of a child or teen, you or your spouse are likely the ones responsible packing your kid's lunches and placing them in a lunchbox or paper bag. New research from Texas indicates in a testing of more than 700 preschoolers' lunch packs, less than 2 percent of those temperature critical foods (meats, dairy and vegetables) were within a safe temperature zone. This, despite the fact that 45 percent of the packed lunches included an ice pack. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends perishable foods be kept cool and that any perishable foods that have reached 40 degrees Fahrenheit or higher for 2 or more hours not be consumed. After all, the latest stats from the CDC indicate that one in six Americans get food poisoning each year. Experts recommend including several ice packs with packed lunches and having perishables placed into a fridge once kids arrive at school to reduce the risk of food poisoning.

Soda Makers Use Tobacco Tactics

Obesity rates have been on the rise with current numbers indicating roughly 2 out of 3 adults and 1 out of 3 children are either overweight or obese. It's hugely concerning as obesity is directly responsible for many detrimental health conditions and in turn has devastating effects on healthcare costs. One of the known culprits for the increase in obesity rates is the increased consumption of sugary drinks such as soda. It's estimated that the average American consumes 56 gallons of sodas each year. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), American adults are consuming 22 teaspoons of sugar daily. For teens, the number shoots up to 34 teaspoons daily. Much of this sugar comes from soft drinks and candy. The AHA suggests adults should be eating no more than 6-9 teaspoons of added sugar daily. Clearly, there's a large discrepancy. New U.S. dietary guidelines now recommend drinking water instead of sugary drinks like soda. A number of public awareness campaigns have been launched by local governments and health departments in order to educate the people about the negative effects of sugary drinks and fatty foods. So what do the large soda makers such as Coca Cola and Pepsi think about these efforts to educate the population and battle obesity? Similar to the past tactics of big tobacco, they're not going to sit idly by and watch our hired officials attempt to keep us healthy. They have increased their lobbying costs from $8 million in 2007 and 2008 to $60 million in 2009 and 2010. They've also targeted and attempted to cripple local governments by either issuing legal document requests or initiating lawsuits. In early July, the American Beverage Association (ABA) sued New York City's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene for their efforts in reducing local obesity rates. According to experts, these tactics come directly from the tobacco industry's playbook. So next time you crack that cool refreshing soda, aside from remembering the negative health effects such as an increased risk of diabetes and heart disease, just remember you're also likely supporting a company that feel it's appropriate to pursue our local health agencies for doing the job we hired them to do - to keep us all healthy.

Is Staying Connected a Pain in the Neck? Get TechnoHealthy!

American Chiropractic Association Launches 2011 Public Health Awareness Campaign The world is getting smaller thanks to modern technology; but unfortunately, aches and pains are growing as a result. This fall, doctors of chiropractic (DCs) will educate the public on how they can stay connected without pain during National Chiropractic Health Month in October. This year’s theme—"Get TechnoHealthy!"—focuses on ways people can remain healthy while toting the gadgets they love or working long hours in front of a computer. The excessive use of mobile devices and incorrect posture while using smart phones and other gadgets or while sitting in front of a computer can lead to neck, back, wrist and even thumb pain, in addition to other musculoskeletal issues. The problem is becoming so widespread that earlier this year a spokesperson for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration said that musculoskeletal injuries remain one of the biggest workplace health and safety problems in American industry. "People will be delighted to learn that they can enjoy technology without experiencing pain," says Dr. Rick McMichael, president of the American Chiropractic Association (ACA). "Our bodies are made to move—not to maintain the same stooped-over posture for long periods of time or to repeat the same motions endlessly. The good news is that there are stretches and exercises that can help prevent pain and injury. There are also natural approaches to treating aches and pain, such as chiropractic care, that don’t involve drugs or surgery."

Experts in treating musculoskeletal conditions, DCs can offer patients a number of strategies to lessen the toll of technology on their bodies. Among them:

  • When using devices such as smart phones and BlackBerries that have small keyboards, avoid typing for more than three minutes without a break.
  • Keep messages short and simple; abbreviate.
  • Practice using other fingers for typing, especially when thumbs hurt.
  • Don’t slouch when texting.
  • Keep wrists upright, straight and close to the body when holding a device.
  • Don’t bend your neck excessively when texting; tuck your chin in instead and look down.
  • Turn your devices off on the weekends (or at least Sunday)!
  • Get outside, exercise and enjoy nature, too! Balance is key to staying healthy.

For more tips on proper use of technology and good health, visit www.TechnoHealthy.com.

Sponsored by ACA, National Chiropractic Health Month is a nationwide observance held each October. The event helps raise public awareness of the benefits of chiropractic care and its natural, whole-person, patient-centered approach to health and wellness.

The American Chiropractic Association (ACA), based in Arlington, Va., is the largest professional association in the United States representing doctors of chiropractic. ACA promotes the highest standards of patient care and ethics, and supports research, legislation, insurance reforms, and public awareness activities that contribute to the health and well-being of millions of chiropractic patients.
