Drs. Baum and Braun speaks:
The 4 essentials to Life:
There have been found to be four basic essentials to life, as we know it. The difference in excellence of these four things gives way to a respective quality of life. Of course, it is left up to you to choose this higher quality, leading you to live longer and happier, instead of just existing!
Food ~ the body can live approximately 30 days without food. The nutrients gained from food give the body energy, supplying fuel for movement as well as healing and self-sustaining actions, (ex. Breathing, blood flow, muscle contractions, etc). It is the quality of this food that determines how much nutrition the body receives. Also determined by this factor, are what toxins the body must "weed out" in order to gain nutrition. Many processed foods today lack nutrition altogether, many vegetables and fruits are covered in pesticides or are genetically engineered. This just presents the body with yet another obstacle, taking away valuable energy from the body to rid itself of such toxic junk. Make a choice, choose organic unprocessed foods, the way nature makes them, and minimize the toxins in your lifestyle.
Water ~ the body can live approximately 4 days without water.
You body has an average of 60 to 70% total make up of water. Your brain is 83%, muscles 75%, and bones 22%. Infants are approximately 70 to 80% water. So really we all just need to drink more, but what about the quality? There are things lurking in our water supplies today. In fact many cities send out alerts as to the local water contents. It is best to start drinking filtered water, and because your skin is an absorptive organ, possibly filter the water in which you bathe!
Air ~ the body can only live for a matter of minutes without air (about 4min.).
Some people have trained hard to gain larger lung capacity. However the world record for holding ones breath is still a matter of minutes. It is the oxygen in our air that allows the body to thrive, a major part of the chemical cycle that produces energy for all the body's functions. Do your part to help keep the air as clean as possible!
~ And Nerve Supply ~
The body can only live a fraction of a second without nerve supply!
The Nervous System has two main parts, the Central and the Peripheral systems. The entire nervous system acts as a master system, it controls everything that you do, and don't think about doing. That is to say, not a single thing happens without your nervous system first initiating an action. In fact it is so important that it is the first thing that is created when a fetus is growing and it is entirely encased in bone for protection. Every action, healing, hearing, seeing, breathing, blood flow, temperature maintenance, originates in the brain. A message travels down the spinal column and out into the body. Subluxations block and slow these messages, and the only way to remove the interference caused by subluxations is to get adjusted.
It is about quality of life! In order to be at 100%, your body must be functioning at 100%! It all begins with your Nervous System! Health comes from within!

Why chiropractic for Children?

Why Chiropractic Care for Children?
Why Should Children Have Chiropractic Care?
More and more parents are seeking chiropractic care for their children. Many spinal problems seen in adults began as early as birth. Even so called 'natural' birthing methods can stress an infant's spine and developing nerve system. The resulting irritation to the nerve system caused by spinal and cranial misalignment can be the cause of many newborn health complaints. Colic, breathing problems, nursing difficulties, sleep disturbances, allergic reactions and chronic infections can often be traced to nerve system stress.
Since significant spinal trauma can occur at birth, many parents have their newborns checked right away. As the infant grows, learning to hold up the head, sit, crawl and walk are all activities that affect spinal alignment and are important times to have a child checked by a Doctor of Chiropractic.
As the child begins to participate in regular childhood activities like skating or riding a bike, small yet significant spinal misalignments (subluxations) may occur. If neglected, the injuries during this period of rapid growth may lead to more serious problems later in life. Subtle trauma throughout childhood will affect the future development of the spine leading to impaired nervous system function. Any interference to the vital nerve system will adversely affect the bodys ability to function at its best.
One of the most common reason parents seek care for their child is trauma from an injury of some sort. These misalignments may or may not result in immediate pain or symptoms. Regular chiropractic checkups can identify potential spinal injury from these traumas, make the correction early in life and help avoid many of the health complaints seen later in adults. Proper spinal hygiene is an important key to better health.
Another sought out reason for care is the resolution of a particular symptom or condition. Parents seek care for conditions such as colic, ear infections, asthma, allergies and headaches (to name a few) because they have heard from other parents that chiropractic care can help.
It is important to understand that the doctor of chiropractic does not treat conditions or diseases. The expertise of the chiropractor is in checking the childs spine for misalignments that impair nervous system function therefore affecting overall body function. The bones of the spine, the vertebrae, house and protect the spinal cord. The spinal cord is an extension of the brain and carries information from the brain to the body parts and back to the brain again. Subluxations interfere with the nerves ability to transmit this vital information.
The nerve system controls and coordinates the function of all the systems in the body: circulatory, respiratory, digestive, hormonal, eliminative and immune system. Any aspect of health may be impaired by nerve interference. The chiropractic adjustment restores nerve system function allowing the body the ability to express a greater state of health and well-being.
The doctor of chiropractic will take a case history and perform a chiropractic exam to determine if spinal subluxations exist. Chiropractic adjusting procedures are modified to fit a child's size, weight, and unique spinal condition. They are both gentle and specific to the childs developing spinal structures. Most parents report that their children enjoy their chiropractic adjustments and look forward to subsequent visits. They also report that their children experience a greater level of health while under regular chiropractic care.
To enhance your childs ability to function in a greater state of health, we can help you find a doctor of chiropractic near you who is dedicated to serving children with the utmost of care. Once your family has experienced the many benefits of chiropractic careplease help us tell others!

A recent case study published in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine
reviewed the care and outcome of a 6-year old girl receiving chiropractic care.
The 6-year old girl was pushed into a playground slide, hitting her head and
resulting in acute complaints of her "neck and brain hurting" and hand, foot,
and occasional leg pain. In addition, she had a several-year history of
unexplained fatigue, vomiting, and coughing spells. Upon examination, the
treating chiropractic doctor found she was suffering from noticeable head tilt,
significant loss of the cervical (neck) range of motion as well as tenderness,
muscle spasm and edema along her cervical (neck) and thoracic (upper back)
regions. After her 5th chiropractic treatment, her symptoms had
dissipated and by her 9th treatment, she was able to return to normal activity.
At 19 weeks, her neck and back continued to be asymptomatic and full and normal
motion had returned to her spine.

Chiropractic Care Cost-Effectiveness for Musculoskeletal Disorders
|

A
new pilot program shows that conservative heath care, including chiropractic,
may reduce overall health care costs in patients with musculoskeletal
disorders, such as back and neck pain. The pilot, conducted by Wellmark Blue
Cross and Blue Shield to measure quality of patient care for its members in
Iowa and South Dakota, also shows promising outcomes for the patients choosing
chiropractic and other conservative care.
"The
cost-effectiveness and safety of chiropractic has been documented in several
studies. The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) is pleased that insurance
companies are starting to recognize the value that doctors of chiropractic and
other conservative providers can offer to their members," said ACA President
Glenn Manceaux, DC. "Especially during the health care reform debate, it's
important that chiropractic and other conservative care methods are taken into
serious consideration as a cost-effective alternative to the utilization of
expensive surgery and hospital-based care," he added.
Wellmark
conducted the Physical Medicine Pilot on Quality in 2008 for Iowa and South
Dakota physical medicine providers. A total of 238 chiropractors, physical therapists
and occupational therapists provided care to 5,500 members with musculoskeletal
disorders. According to Wellmark, data from participating clinicians show that
89 percent of the patients treated in the pilot reported a greater than
30-percent improvement in 30 days.
The
pilot compared data for Wellmark members who received care from doctors of
chiropractic or physical therapists with a member population with similar
demographics who did not receive such services. The comparison showed that
those who received chiropractic care or physical therapy were less likely to
have surgery and experienced lower total health care costs, according to
Wellmark.
Chiropractic
is widely recognized as one of the safest non-invasive therapies available for
the treatment of back pain, neck pain, headaches and other neuromusculoskeletal
complaints. A significant amount of evidence shows that chiropractic care for
certain conditions can be more effective and less costly than traditional
medical care. Recent research includes:
- A
study published in the October 2005 issue of the Journal of Manipulative
and Physiological Therapeutics (JMPT) found that chiropractic and medical
care have comparable costs for treating chronic low-back pain, with
chiropractic care producing significantly better outcomes.
- A
March 2004 study in JMPT found that chiropractic care is more effective
than medical care at treating chronic low-back pain in patients' first
year of symptoms.
- A
study published in a 2003 edition of the medical journal Spine found that
manual manipulation provides better short-term relief of chronic spinal
pain than do a variety of medications.

Did you know that aquatic-based (water-based) exercise can be very
beneficial for lower back pain? New research indicates in certain cases, it can
actually be more effective than land-based exercise. In a recent study of 65
chronic low back pain patients, individuals were randomly assigned to receive either
aquatic exercise or land-based exercise. Patients performed 5 exercise sessions
per week for 4 weeks 20 total exercise sessions over 4 weeks. Patients were initially
evaluated a 0 weeks, then re-evaluated at 4 and 12 weeks. Both groups
experienced statistically significant improvements with certain improvements in
lower back disability being superior within the aquatic exercise group.

Heart Disease is the number 1 killer in America as well as other
parts of the world. Aside from the obvious exercise and physical activity, diet
also greatly affects one's risk for developing heart disease. New research
indicates that broccoli and other green leafy vegetables can provide a natural
defense against heart disease. British researchers recently discovered that
broccoli and other brassicas turn on a protective protein in the arteries that in
effect, prevent the arteries from clogging with fatty plaques, especially in
the most vulnerable parts of the arteries most prone to clogging. While
additional research is in the works, these preliminary findings drive home the
importance of eating plenty of green leafy vegetables on a regular basis.
